more painting

I've been posting a lot! Well, I do have a bit more free time so I am trying to get back into painting. So here are some exercise type stuff inspired from several different photos I took in the Florida keys, I should probably do some more refined stuff. . .

Gestures!

More gestures between 2-5 minutes.

Gestures

Gestures! I really like gesture drawing. I am about halfway through the class so here are some of the drawings I favored. Some have different objectives, like to just draw with the edge of your conte, or to be creative, or draw more design than literal. Most are between 2 and 5 minutes.

Zoo Illustration

Final Zoo Concept Piece! I've spent the past few days trying to figure out how we want the zoo to look and to make sure everything fits together in Izzy's world. Anthony Holden who has been on of the main designers has helped create a really cool style that I have been trying to carry through the whole piece, I think this film is going to have a really fun feel too it! This is supposed to be final but I always seem to find things I want to change so I'm up for feedback.

IZZY

I haven't been too great at posting, probably because my internship ended and school started within a few days of each other! Also I'm spending a lot of free time on the film I am directing . It hasn't been without its share of difficulties, most of which stem from different opinions and an inexperienced student director, but I am trying to learn and push this project forward and I think it is starting to come together rather well! I appreciate everyone's help and patience and I am excited for this year.

Oh and here is a sketch that has nothing to do with the story, but that I wanted to doodle!

Lightrail Sketching!!!

Even though I haven't been posting, I actually have been producing a good amount of art lately. Most of which has been illustration type work for Trading Card Games that I have been doing with my internship at Sony Online Entertainment, which I can't post! (I might be able to post some low res stuff, but not till they are released in the games.) The good news is I have been sketchbooking! More consistently then I probably ever had, everyday on my 30 minute lightrail commute I have a never ending variety of unsuspecting subjects. I just put on my sunglasses and sketch, its really enjoyable.

Kid's Jungle Mural

I was commissioned to paint this mural, in the room of a 4 year old. Luckily I also really like to paint tigers/jungles so it worked out perfectly. Him and his twin sister periodically walked in and would say "looks good" and run out, they were way funny. And since it took me 3 days to complete, his mom had to assure him I didn't forget to paint the animals. (I was just saving them for last).

Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to take a good picture with the lighting so the photos aren't great and don't do it justice, does anyone have any recommendations for photographing a wall?

Zion Concept Painting

*Here is the final . . . If you want to see it printed and hanging up it is going to be part of a show with my plein-air paintings in the HFAC, on the main floor in the side displays starting wenesday!

This is a piece I am working on as a part of the group that went to zions, we're going to do a show and we're supposed to create a unique environment with a story. So here is mine. The group already gave me some helpfull feedback, I'm still working on it, but I should be done soon.

IZZY and the Rhino . . .and a Monkey?

So the film IZZY is coming along. I have been pretty busy with the story but I did have time to do this color key, and this texture concept piece painted over a lit 3D model. (the designs were done by Anthony, and the rhino was modeled by Levi.) I am trying to get a subtle texture that emphasizes the shape of the rhino but is still very cool and detailed in some places.

Work stuff.

As of late I have been doing different things for the flash games in a Hebrew course, as you can see I do like to draw animals, and paint whatever, so here are the ones I liked the most. I also got to do some flash animation for some of the animals, which was way fun, but I haven't tried to figure out how to post it.

Portfolio Piece

Tis the season to submit for internships. Most of the ones I am interested are definitely a long shot but I'm gonna give it a try, and I still have one whole year left. Working on the senior film Izzy has consumed a lot of the time I could be using to work on my portfolio. In the future I need to set aside more time for this, but for now here is a piece I started yesterday because my portfolio I felt was lacking your typical broken bridge going to an Island piece. Last minute critiques?

IZZY

For our film IZZY which takes place in a Zoo, mostly, I have been working on color keys/look development. I have been kinda struggling, but I think its starting to get somewhere. Here is my first one, and the second one I just finished today it pretty rough but I think its starting to work. Maybe i'll do another variation tomorrow in the hopes that it gets better each time. Any feedback would be wonderful.

ZIONS

This oil was just off the road we just pulled over and found this amazing trail.

This was the last day, I wanted to do one more watercolor, another amazing trail at Zions.

This oil was done near a graveyard, part of the abandoned town we went two near Springdale.

Another watercolor.

The 3rd day I was sick of hauling around a ton of stuff, so I started doing some watercolor at the narrows trail.

At the same spot I did this really quick oil sketch.

This was the second day, near the Emerald Pools trail head, also Oil.

This was my first crack at oil on the trip, at Kolob canyon on the way down.

So last minute I went on this environment painting trip to Zions national park. It was awesome, I have never painted so much in 4 days, especially from nature! It was great to paint with fellow students, the illustration faculty and also Dave McClellan from Avalanche. I think I improved alot too, so here are all the paintings I completed in the order I did them. Also I learned that hiking with a french easel really is not as fun as you might imagine.

Which bush is Best?

So lately I've been drawing and designing things for our BYU short film. We want things to be simple shapes with textures that still are interesting. (with a child like quality to them for the story). So I've have been drawing alot of bushes to kind of get the feel for the final look and feel, here are some texture ideas -tell me what you love, and possibly what you don't.

Also another animation student had the idea of having crayon drawings layered on top of the texture, so here are 3 variations, let me know what you think . . .

Oil Painting Final

For my painting final I wanted to do something awesome! I had a ton of fun and really felt like I learned alot in Robert Barretts class about color and painting. Special thanks to my friend Mache for posing (yes she is that pretty), and for my brothers roomate dan for providing a sweet fake gun reference. My digital camera wouldn't take that good of a picture, maybe i'll try to scan it or something later.

Character Design Final

Here it is folks- The story is about about a former drug lord who found poaching more profitable so he started following this biologist and his friend who is making a documentary on the Hyacinth Macaws to find where they nest! That is the short version, maybe i'll explain some more of my ideas later on. But I have been mad dashing to finish these. I think they are way way better then my final from winter semester, I still wish I had more time to get some feed back and didn't have to rush some of it. Let me hear your comments.

What is 3D???

You we're right . . . some of you, it was the skateboard, if you guessed wrong you made me feel really good because that was the point of the assignment! (I did tweek it alittle more)

For our final in renderman class we have to create something in 3d and composite it into a photograph. ie model, texture, light it and setup it up so it looks like it belongs to in the photo.

Here is my final, so If you want comment as to what you think is 3D, and in a couple of days i'll post it with out the object(s)!

Character Design: Emulation

This is an ocelot I designed, trying to emulate the style of Jasen Strong. This was also my first time using flash, with a little help it was really easy to use. I have other stuff I need to post when I have more time!

Some fun at the bean museum with a pen.
